Daily post: Happy birthday!

October 16th is officially declared “Person X Day” — and you get to pick Person X. Tell us about someone who deserves to be commemorated.

Seems to me most of the bigwigs are covered. Every country has its own list of people they think are worth a bit of a ra ra, religions have their saints and icons well in hand, and if you’ve ever looked at a list of them, we’ve already got World/International Days to cover pretty much every sector of society by profession, illness, service, disability, social standing, disadvantage, age or environment. (The obscenely rich may not be mentioned, but I guess they have their own ways of celebrating themselves.)

And when you think about it, most of us have our own it’s-all-about-me day tied up in ribbons and handed to us before we’ve even squeaked – our birthdays.

But what about those whose birthdays come around every year without a single person being any the wiser? No cards, no presents, no celebration of the fact that they even exist? That on this day however many years ago, a new individual entered this world, infinitely special by their very uniqueness, and no one honours them even by acknowledging it? It would be hard to think you mattered, wouldn’t it.

So that’s my vote.

So all those people out there whose birthdays pass unnoticed:

Whatever day you were actually born, today is your special day, and I’m thinking of you.
