Daily post: The conversation I’m glad I wasn’t allowed to hear

by Krista on December 2, 2013
Tell us about a conversation you couldn’t help but overhear and wish you hadn’t.

It was Christmas Eve. I was about four. It was almost bedtime. The tree was up, and excitement fizzed like a lit sparkler.

And then disaster.

I was sent off to the kitchen while my dad explained to my sisters the subtleties of my present from my grandmother.

I probably whinged. It wasn’t fair.

‘Really?’ my mother said. ‘I’d be thrilled as peanut.’

And that’s one of my favourite mental snapshots: my mother, face flushed with heat from the oven as she turned to me, oven cloth still in hand, blue eyes bright with amusement.

It was worth the banishment.
