DAILY PROMPT: NOW YOU SEE ME
by Krista on December 3, 2013
You have a secret superpower: the ability to appear and disappear at will. When and where will you use this new superpower? Tell us a story.
Once upon a time there was a little girl. Her name doesn’t matter because she was rarely called by it – which didn’t bother her in the least since most of the alternatives were affectionate, although it did mean she felt strangely nameless in later years when it became the only one she had, and seemed to refer to a person she didn’t know. But even that wasn’t insurmountable. She became ‘Mum’ and then ‘Grandma’ – although funnily enough, even the ‘Mum’ was later smothered in a happy range of nicknames.
Anyway, she was pretty content on the whole. An older cousin pointed out recently that she was more a shadow on the fringes than an entity in herself, but so what? She pottered, made up stories, learned to read… Not exactly hip and happening, but you must understand that these were the olden days, when hip and happening was strictly confined to bohemians – an offbeat minority generally considered weird by the conventional masses.
Her school days weren’t a barrel of laughs, but we shall draw a veil over that. What’s to be gained by reliving misery, after all? Suffice to say that when she emerged from the educational institution that taught her too many things she didn’t want to know, she had not only recognised the full beauty of invisibility, but had committed herself to it with all the fervour of a true believer pursuing the Holy Grail.
Of course, being human and therefore imperfect, she did have the occasional lapse from time to time, but being also reasonably intelligent, she learned. She now lives in a small community where very few people know her name and even fewer care.
Invisibility, thy name is… How should I know? I never see her for long enough to ask.
