DAILY PROMPT: LAND OF CONFUSION
Which subject in school did you find impossible to master? Did math give you hives? Did English make you scream? Do tell!
Academically, school was a relative breeze – but that was the only breezy thing about it. (Well, except for the dormitories, where ‘breeze’ meant arctic gale whistling up through the floorboards in winter.)
For the rest – it was an alien jungle filled with slavering monsters, carnivorous vines, and tortuous paths that moved in the night. Cliques and social factions, alliances and tactics, all desperately important in the potent hothouse of 300 adolescent girls isolated from the normal counteraction of parental reassurance and a wider perspective.
And then there was gym. Forty minutes of undiluted torture once a week for five years. I mean, is it reasonable to expect a fat, earthbound child with no previous training to do something like this? And is it fair to bellow like a sergeant major when she baulks (once a week for five years)? I ask you!
No wonder I’m weird.

Sport! Yes, I never made a team, and there were lots! That was held to be important in the scheme of things. You describe it so well, the draughty dorms, we had those too!
Toughened us up! Not to mention the dreadful food… that’s another subject on its own.
With hideous names, like spotted dog, murder on the alps, graveyard stew, gangrene pie…
AAAAH! The vault horse! The creature of my living nightmares. Hated PE – phys. Ed. Hated everything about it. You ask a very important question: is it reasonable? No! NO NO NO!
How did we not break our necks or backs leaping over those things?

We are total opposites, gym was my best subject because I hated learning. I loved the exercise!

No. Never got off the ground. But some people did. It was a collective ‘we’ catering to all levels of success.
