Seasonal Scents
S’mores, salty ocean breezes, veggie burgers on the grill, sweaty people on the bus — what’s the smell you associate the most with summer?
Tut tut, WP, there you go again, discriminating against the downunderdog. Not very PC, is it. I can still vaguely conjure up the scents of summer, but it’s an intellectual exercise at this point, devoid of all the evocative wonderment bursting from those slathered in sunscreen and chucking prawns on the barbie… Sorry, tending steaks on the grill. (And presumably eating s’mores, which I had to look up.)
I can understand, of course. It’s always good business to cater to the majority. As a topic, The Waywardness of Winter is not likely to rustle up much enthusiasm amongst the hoards from the Northern Hemisphere busily trying to forget the rigours of the polar vortex.
But I’m also pretty sure it’s fair to say that we know more about you than you know about us. Not surprising. What happens here is small beer compared to the worlds won and lost in the north. I mean, the Wall St butterfly flapped its wings and global finance blew over. But I do sometimes wonder whether to you, civilisation stops at the equator.Do I care?
No.
Interesting, though.
Dear Barbie — Don’t let them throw fish at you any more. Love, Martha
P.S. Tell Helen I would probably love to live where the seasons are all backwards and water goes down the drain in a very odd direction. It would be nice not to be living in one of the world’s causal cultures. I quit even trying to follow the news here. It’s too sad, frustrating, stupid. It’s like having bottom feeders thrown at you constantly. Barbie knows.
Barbie knows all and says nothing. Smart! There’s a lot to be said for flying under the global radar.
Sunblock. Now that’s one thing that will forever bring me back to summer. Around here though,it’s summer 10 months out of the year.. so in a sense almost everything I associate with summer. Seagulls yapping , beaming sun-rays on my skin , the feeling of entering a sauna the second you walk out side. It was actually really nice remembering all those wonderful things. Thank you for posing the question !
Pleasure!
Well done Helen! I do appreciate our seasons.
Victoria has more than I do here – all in one day, I’m told!
