Daily prompt: The happy off-the-hooker

A second #RoyalBaby will soon be joining the Windsors in England. Given the choice, would you rather be heir to the throne, or the (probably) off-the-hook sibling?

Oh, the younger sibling, definitely. Thrones are always such a long way from the kindly camouflage of wallpaper, and even the thought of being a spotlit bug on a pin is too horrible to contemplate.

Anyway, I’m used to being the youngest, so I’ve got the moves down pat. We’re the ones who lurk in the shadows while our elders reach all the interesting milestones first, knowing full well that by the time we make it to that exalted status, familiarity will have reduced ‘exalted’ to ‘routine’, and natural attrition will have whittled party numbers down to manageable proportions. We like that.

The downside of being the youngest is that your siblings have a nasty habit of Setting the Standard – in my case, high intelligence and high achievement. But even so, once you’ve fallen short of the bar a few times, people give up expecting too much, and you can drift into blessed obscurity secure in the knowledge that the also-ran is out-of-sight-out-of-mind material even before weights are called for the next race.

However there’s one area of expertise in which I outshine my sisters every time. Neither of them has my exceptional ability to shoot herself in the foot.

I’m sure you outshine them in many ways! Have they published a book?
By the way, I put a review of your book on my blog today! Hope you like it! 🙂

  2. Delightful as always, Helen. As an oldest child, I shoot myself often in that very same place as well:0)

  3. I’m the oldest of five and was chartered with setting the example. We laugh that the youngest of us had a totally different set of parents, so shell-shocked by raising all of us through the seventies, that they just let Mary be. She is the light-hearted, funny one of the bunch.
